For this basket I played off the rich burgundy of the ceramic center (made by local Napa potter Trish Danby) using some of my deepest red needles. A ring of sweetgrass and green needles creates a contrasting band while enhancing the the basket’s natural pine needle scent with the sweet grassy fragrance known so well in the low country. I grow my own sweetgrass just outside my Napa, California studio in order to have the freshest dried grasses to work with.
I have worked in a few pieces of wild oats as a white accent.
