Summer Leaves Winter Serving Basket

I’m often asked if I make longer baskets, either rectangular or oval shaped, that can hold mail. It’s rare for me to make one, but here is my most recent.

It took me quite a while to make this particular basket, not counting putting it aside for several months while I built up my supply of smaller baskets.

I have again used the long leaf pine needles I’ve cooked in glycerin and water, some of them dyed with RIT Dye. Woven with the pine needles you will find cherry colored Wild Oats, dyed by the same method as the pine needles.

This basket uses several different stitches for variety. I made the ceramic center using a rose stem and leaves from the garden outside my studio, and backed it with leather I picked out of the remnants bin at The Hide House. The top edge is rimmed with small green glass beads.

I think this basket would serve very well as a bread basket, but equally well to hold mail by the front door.
